Manufacturing Takes Flight

Manufacturing Takes Flight Manufacturing Takes Flight Manufacturing Takes Flight.mb-2 margin-bottom 12pxWalk across the spotlessly clean and well-lit floors of Pratt Whitneys 1 million-square-foot manufacturing plant in North Berwick, Maine, and youll pass by dozens of closed-door CNC machines, each the size of a large refrigerator. The machines quietly whir and hum as they turn, mill and grind finished parts for the companys Geared Turbofan jet engines. Robotic arms easily lift and stack heavy gears. Shop-floor workers who once did the dirty work and heavy lifting barely touch the parts. Instead, they operate the machines, usually with a push of a button, monitor their health and progress, and oversee the automated processes. Welcome to the New Age of Manufacturing.Manufacturing specialists rely on integrated software systems to monitor the health and performance of CNC machines. Image Pratt WhitneyFive years ago, none of the machines were here. Today, they are essential to Pratt Whitneys Industry 4.0 initiative, a $200 million capital investment program over the past five years to improve overall productivity and meet increased demand for its commercial and military jet engines. This shift marks a major transformation from the labor-intensive manual processes that once defined manufacturing to those that are now digitized and automated. The changes here helped PW improve key metricsproduction volume, quality assurance, labor reduction, cycle time, to name a fewby up to 65 percent, depending on the gruppe and the part theyre working on. In this new world, companies not only have to update the types of machines and systems they use to remain competitive, but they also have to change the way they recruit, hire, and train the engineers and technicians who work on them.PWs North Berwick Aero Systems Plant, with its ongoing implementation of new machines and processes, and an aggressive hiring strategy that has attracted a new type of engineer, is a microcosm of those changes. To better understand them and how they impact the future of engineering and manufacturing, just spend a few minutes with robotics specialist Jeff Lemke and his deburring machine.Recommended for You A Special Report on ManufacturingNew Machines, New Employees, New FutureA contractor with IT placement firm RGBSI, Lemke was brought in last February to program the robotic deburrer. A few months ago, he stood in the workstation, or cell, with Mac McCluskey, a manufacturing engineer technician who has worked at PW for 38 years and now oversees the operation of the machine. Lemke is tall, thin and relatively quiet. He looks the part of a programmer. McCluskey, on the other hand, is stocky and barrel-chested. He speaks with the ease and confidence of a 40-year shop-floor veteran. Despite the contrast, the two men work well together, communicate easily, and share a common respect for the different skills each brings to the table.Thats the type of teamwork PW is trying to prop agate on the shop floor as it partners an influx of new hires, many of them digitally savvy with varying degrees of experience in new technologies and manufacturing processes, with veteran machinists and laborers, who over the years have helped to build the aviation giant into what it is today. As the company strives over the next seven years to fill nearly 20,000 positions expected to open due to retirement or created through Industry 4.0 initiatives, PWs future relies on these two sides working together as they learn and implement new manufacturing technologies. Examples of that, and the transition they illustrate, are on anzeigegert at many of the cells spread across the shop floor.Take the robotic deburring cell. Before PW acquired the machine, a team of six highly skilled laborers manually deburred turbine casings. They used their eyes and sense of touch to identify a raised or unnecessarily sharp edge, an unwanted piece of material, or other imperfection left on the part after it was manufactured. Each piece took six hours to manually grind and polish. The team finished about 30 a month. Ergonomics, lacerations, and consistency were always an issue. Today, the only time a technician like McCluskey touches the turbine casing is to load and remove it from the machine.Meanwhile, Lemke adjusts the machine for accuracy and consistency, and programs its visual guidance system to precisely identify the orientation, position, and shape of the part being deburred. He also tweaks the formula of the liquid abrasive the machine uses to autonomously grind and remove the burrs. Each part takes about two hours to deburr. The machine never suffers from sore muscles or cut skin. Quality consistency has improved by up to 90 percent.PW employs three robotics specialists in the North Berwick plant. Veteran employees like McCluskey, those who have successfully transitioned into Industry 4.0 practices, understand how important the new machines, processes, and job titles are t o the future of PW and the areas economy. We need mora engineers like Jeff, McCluskey said. When they bring in more robots, theyll need more programmers. Theres no question that both are coming. Employees and pundits in other industries might worry about automation eliminating workers. Not McCluskey. He sees them as creating new opportunities.A huge misnomer of robots is that they eliminate jobs, he said. An entry-level deburrer will be able to learn robotics and go onto different, more important jobs in the shop. Its not replacing workers, but enhancing entry-level employees.Lemke, who represents the new type of engineer that PW is looking for, makes that happen. These new engineers are comfortable working across disciplines. They embrace technology and are willing to learn about new ones. They can quickly analyze data and use it to make real-time decisions. They can solve problems by thinking on their feet instead of slogging through a manual. By tweaking and optimizing the robotic deburrer, for example, Lemke improved its performance by a factor of two, said Mike Newsky, a 33-year PW veteran. As associate director of manufacturing and industrial engineering, he oversees 140 people at the North Berwick plant. Equipment suppliers are always trying to hire him because he does such a good job, Newsky said. He does stuff they cant.Lemke also does the stuff that PW needs as it transitions into the future. Hes adjusted the program so that any operator can walk up to it, push a button and operate the machine, Newsky said. He makes sure the process can be run by anyone who walks up to the machine.Newsky said he needs more people like that in North Berwick. In fact, all of PW does.Looking for a New Type of Engineerbelastung spring, PW president Bob Leduc said as much while speaking to the media at United Technologies Digital, a modern office with an open layout that overlooks the East River in Brooklyns hip DUMBO neighborhood. Its where United Technologies, PWs parent company, develops digital technologies, including analytics, diagnostic, and predictive software and other enterprise applications. The environment was an apt setting for Leducs announcement, one of many company executives make to not only let the world know PW is hiring but that this new, clean, digitized, and automated environment is much different than how most people think of yesterdays manufacturing. PW has already hired more than 7,000 employees over the last several years for jobs in its plants, including those in Maine and Connecticut. About 2,000 of those were engineers. Today, many have learned skills and work in roles not traditionally associated with the core discipline they studied in school.About 10 years ago, PWs biggest need was mechanical engineers and their foundation in aerodynamic, thermal, and structural engineering, Leduc said. While those traditional skills are still needed, PW is looking for and willing to train a new breed of engineer. They might come in wi th some digital or advanced manufacturing knowledge, but the most attractive candidates have demonstrated a big desire to learn new technologies and processes, communicate those with others, and willingly accept new responsibilities and roles.Katie Wenner is one of them. She graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering and now works in PWs Manufacturing Engineering Development Program, one of six undergraduate leadership programs PW offers promising young engineers, technicians, and other workers. She was teamed with veteran Bob Francoeur on a five-axis CNC machine used for turning, milling, and deburring parts. Machines like this reduce cycle times by 60 percent and labor by 75 percent. Conventional machining processes used to deliver about 20 parts each per month. Each new machine now finishes between 40 and 60.Many of those efficiencies can also be attributed to the ProLink statistical process control software that PWs engineers and technicians like Wenner use to monitor in real-time the performance and health of the machines. The statistics constantly scroll across multiple monitors in the cells. The software automatically creates spreadsheets, databases, and other reports that engineers use to optimize overall production. All of that used to be done with pen and paper, a process that took up tons of time and was susceptible to error. It helps in all the automation that were doing, said Dale Doucette, a process certification technician, who was working in a cell near Wenners that finished heat shields for turbine casings. There are fewer mistakes and higher output, he said. Since integrating the software, production of the parts increased 50 percent, Doucette said.Wenner spends her days learning the process of developing finely tuned parts and then sharing and communicating those processes with other workers. The job requires soft skillslike communications and the ability to gain the trust of a variety of peop le working at different levels that are increasingly important to the company. You have to properly communicate this information to the machine operators, said Wenner, who plans to work at PWs engine production and assembly center in Middletown, Conn., sometime this year. No one here can work in a vacuum. Not one person knows the entire operation. That might be true, but PW offers its promising engineers, technicians, and operators the opportunity to work across many of the companys divisions and, eventually, up the ladder. With Industry 4.0 we cant train our engineers fast enough, Newsky said, adding that one of the most difficult aspects of these new roles is staying current with all of the latest technologies. Its continuous learning and continuous training, he said. Its about engaging your people to feel comfortable making decisions, taking on risks, and learning from mistakes. Not Your Fathers Idea of ManufacturingTo find those new engineers and techniciansa search made more diff icult by the tight labor marketPW has expanded its multi-prong hiring initiative, including a big push to increase its involvement and tighten its relationships with the areas vocational technical schools, community colleges, and universities. PW looks for schools with courses focused on advanced manufacturing and Industrial Internet of Things concepts, such as additive manufacturing, robotics, AI, networking, and data analytics. For an idea of where PW is looking for its talent, walk off the shop floor and head to a small conference room at the end of a hallway that houses the menschlich resources offices. A map of the United States hangs on the wall. A heavy cluster of colored pins sprout from Maine and New Hampshire. Smaller clusters sprout from the other New England states. About 32 blue pins mark the areas technical high schools and about 45 red pins identify community colleges. Two green pins stick out from the crowd, marking the University of Maine and the University of New Ha mpshire, two schools with strong engineering programs. This is just the beginning, Lorraine Marcotte, PWs communications director said, regarding PWs new strategy. Weve done a lot of recruiting, but not this type of targeting. As part of its partnering, recruiting, and retention efforts, the company offers internships, co-op jobs, scholarships, program gifts, education reimbursement, collaboration on senior projects, and other incentives. Despite the high security concerns of a company that works so closely with the military, PW is hosting more open-house events to let area educators, guidance counsellors, and students see what the new type of manufacturing is all about. PW execs and engineers sit on the schools advisory boards and, among other things, share with each other the types of courses they might add or trends they should explore to better prepare their students for Industry 4.0 careers.PW has always had a strong reputation in the area as a good employer. So good, in fact, t hat born-and-bred Mainers who have earned a reputation for shunning outsiders make a major exception for people from Connecticut because PWs main headquarters are in East Hartford. The areas other major manufacturers, such as Bath Iron Works and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, as well as a handful of important tech companies in and around Portland, Maine, also have good reps. But PW, locals said, takes the extra step in nurturing local partnerships and treating its employees well.I think PW has done really well at reaching out. They are one of the companies that comes back and really drives the relationship, said Brad Kinsey, department chair and professor of mechanical engineering at the University of New Hampshire, who was quick to note that PW made several substantial gifts and scholarships related to the departments new John Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center. Not all companies are willing to sign up to that level that they have signed up for.The Need for AutomationWhen Dana Hum phrey became dean of engineering at the University of Maine in Orono 12 years ago, the first manufacturer he visited was PW. Despite a handful of important manufacturers that are much closer to his campus, Humphrey visits PW the most. Given the close relationship between the school and the company, he takes pride in seeing first-hand PWs Industry 4.0 transformation and knowing that so many of his graduates, on both the manufacturing and design sides, have played integral roles in that transition. Its also gratifying, he said, to see how accepting, embracing, and leveraging major changes in industry, no matter how disruptive, benefits a community, a state, and a nation.Automation allows American manufacturing to be more cost competitive, he said. Look at companies like Pratt Whitney. Theyre creating more opportunities for employees, not less. The more cost competitive you are, the more products you can create and the more work you generate. Its an upward spiral. Adult workers need t he opportunity to be trained in these skills, and you need new entrees, like high school graduates, integrated into this type of work. These are great jobs.Jeff OHeir is ASME.orgs senior content manager and producer of ASME TechCast, a new podcast brought to you by the editors of ASME.org and Mechanical Engineering magazine. Also read Special Report on Manufacturing For Further Discussion

Gibson Dunn Lawyers On Choosing Transactional Law

Gibson Dunn Lawyers On Choosing Transactional LawGibson Dunn Lawyers On Choosing Transactional LawGibson, Dunn Crutcher associate Saee Muzumdar caught up with corporate partners Barbara Becker, who heads the firms MA group, and Rashida La Lande, NY hiring partner, for a discussion about why they chose to be corporate lawyers and some of the benefits of transactional work. From Left,Saee Muzumdar,Barbara Becker, andRashida La Lande.Saee Law school is relatively litigation (or at least case law) focused- what drew you to transactional work?Barbara I had tried litigation as a summer associate- I thought I wanted to be a first amendment litigator I worked on a fabulous high profile case, but even though the assignment welches interesting, the nature of the work felt too much to me like a continuation of school and I was ready for something different. I tried corporate work and it was a natural fit. I very much enjoy working in teams, and collaborating with colleagues both at Gibson Dunn and the client, to achieve our clients goals.Saee Ive found that transactional work experience can produce a wide range of future work opportunities outside a law firm. Can you talk a little bit about some of the careers former colleagues of yours have gone on to? What kind of roles have you been able to help corporate associates obtain?Barbara The skills you learn as a corporate lawyer, including analysis of complex legal issues (and relating such issues to particular clients and deals), information synthesis, people management and communication to a geschftlicher umgang audience, allow lawyers to transfer easily into lots of jobs outside a law firm. Over the years, colleagues of ours have gotten fabulous jobs as in-house lawyers at corporations and investment banks, and many have transitioned to the business side of transactions at PE/hedge funds or head of strategy/business development at companies.Rashida I couldnt agree more. MA in particular gives you the opportunity to focus on and understand not only the legal aspects of a transaction, but also the financial aspects. You come to learn the key drivers of growth and risk for your clients and different schrifts of businesses, which skills are invaluable for a broad scope of non-law firm jobs.At Gibson Dunn, because our system permits associates to remain unassigned for the first two years of practice, and because thereafter we have a free market system, associates tend to get a broad perspective of transactional work and issues relevant to corporations, which makes them highly sought after for in-house corporate positions. Some recent examples that come to mind include a senior associate who transitioned with the firms assistance to becoming the general counsel for a boutique investment bank, a former associate who has gone on to become the general counsel of a small energy company, a mid-level associate who recently left for a VP job at a hedge fund, and another mid-level associate that the firm assisted in placing at a senior legal position at a multinational media conglomerate.Saee Obviously none of those kinds of external opportunities appealed to you What are some of the most interesting deals you have worked on? What factors led you to stay at Gibson Dunn to make partner?Barbara The intellectual challenge as well as the ability to work with smart people (who I really like) is what keeps me at the firm. We get to work on a companys most strategic and challenging transactions and collaborate with clients, both the in-house lawyers and the business teams, to come up with creative solutions to complex problems. I especially like working on cross-border deals where different cultures and legal regimes come into play. For example, Krafts acquisition of Cadbury was a particularly interesting transaction both from a business perspective and also because of the complications associated with coordinating different legal regimes to achieve our clients objective. In addition, I enjoy helpin g to build a practice, which involves client development but also developing a team within the firm that includes our youngest lawyers as well as experts in different areas across all of our offices. Finally, I think one aspect that law students may overlook is that we give our lawyers the flexibility to manage their careers and their own schedules. Although we are all responsive to clients and the requirements of the being a partner at a large law firm, I have a tremendous amount of flexibility in creating my schedule and managing competing demands for my time.Saee Thats a very good point, I know each of you has 4 children- without sounding overly clich, how are you able to have it all?Barbara The firm is an incredibly supportive place, not just for women and mothers but for all of our lawyers and staff. As I said before, the benefit of working at a law firm is the flexibility to generally manage your schedule and beyond that, the firm has provided me with opportunities to continue to build a successful practice while maintaining a high-quality family life.Saee What type of person do you think would enjoy transactional work? You have both been the hiring partner for GDCs NY office, what characteristics make recruits stand out in interview?Rashida The nature of transactional, and particularly MA, work tends to draw people who enjoy math more than your stereotypical lawyer because you are so integrally involved in the business/financial aspects of the deal. In my experience, the most successful MA lawyers are the ones who understand the big picture and enjoy putting deals together. This requires broader thinking and the ability to see the forest through the trees without getting bogged down in details. You often hear the analogy of the MA lawyer as the quarterback- the job requires you to synthesize information from various experts around the firm, apply it to the clients business and the deal at hand, and come up with workable (and legal) solutions to deal-issu es.In addition to looking for candidates that are smart and enthusiastic, I look for people that have common sense and a good way with clients/people. We of course want people who have done their homework about the firm and are excellent communicators. I tend to think law students that are proactive, thoughtful, entrepreneurial, and enjoy problem-solving make successful lawyers at Gibson Dunn. This is a sponsored blog post from Gibson, Dunn Crutcher. Why Small Businesses Need Employee Performance Reviews

Why Small Businesses Need Employee Performance ReviewsWhy Small Businesses Need Employee Performance ReviewsWhy Small Businesses Need Employee Performance Reviews Berkowitz, Esq.If youre like most small business entrepreneurs, you are a mega-multi-taskerparte salespart, part manager, part accountant and even part parent.Without a formal human resources department, many small businesses rely on their owner to make decisions about hiring, firing and all employment matters in between. And as any HR professional will tell you, dealing with personnel problems can take more than part of your time it can be all-consuming. That makes it all the more important to take a pro-active approach in managing employee development with effective wertzuwachs reviews.Avoiding the Issue Can Become the IssueIts easy as a small business owner to let performance problems slide (Robert is having marital problems or Julia just had a baby.) In other cases, a boss may assume that the casual conversation she had in the break room with an underperforming worker about picking up the pace welches enough to address the issue. After all, one of the advantages of working for a smaller company is the company culture- the close-knit environment and personal interaction between boss and employees. Some small business owners may wish to avoid the employment formalities of bigger corporations such as written reviews or probationary periods out of concern that such procedures would ruin the family-like atmosphere of the workplace. But the desire to keep things friendly and personal can go too far. If a boss makes employment decisions based on personal feelings, he or she risks violating the law by treating employees inconsistently (see below.) Remember, it is possible to maintain the collegial work environment of a small business while following important legal issues. Doing so will be good for any company big or small. It will also help focus employee development over time.Be Sure to Document Emplo yment ProblemsBy not documenting an employees performance problems and the steps taken to inform the employee about them, its almost as if they never happened. Avoiding the conversation not only jeopardizesemployee development but can quickly create tension in a small workplace as other workers pick up the slack from the underperformer. How should a business owner address an employees performance problems?Have a face-to-face meeting with the employee to discuss the issue.Include a second person at the meeting if possible such as the employee who handles HR matters.Document in writing what was discussed at the meeting, including the type of expected improvements, a timeline for review of the employees performance and consequences if the employee does not meet performance goals. If youre considering employee termination, carefully assess whether the employee needs additional training or support to help perform the job. Then, have the employee sign the document. A signature should not indicate that the employee agrees with the assessment, only that he or she has been informed of the issue. Allow the employee to submit a rebuttal which also becomes part of his or her file.Be sure to revisit the employees performance as scheduled and hold the employee to the consequences if he or she has not met performance goals.Be Consistent with Employee EvaluationsTake care to treat all employees the same with regard to leave, pay, discipline and other employment issues, regardless of what you may know about their personal lives. For example, if you discipline a male salesperson for failing to make his quota, you must similarly discipline a female salesperson even though you know she is a single parent whose performance issues are likely a result of childcare problems. As much as you might want to make exceptions for employees because of their personal situations, doing so can create the appearance of unlawful special treatment. The laws regarding employment require that employ ers treat employees equally with respect to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.Although it is true that some employees are entitled to workplace accommodations to help them perform their jobs, the rulesgoverning how and when an accommodation is due are detailed and specific. Before making a workplace exception with respect to discipline, benefits or other work policies, it is a good idea to talk to an employment lawyer, or contact one of the EEOCs small business liaisons with specific questions.Legal Disclaimer None of the information provided herein constitutes legal advice on behalf of Monster.

The Stay Interview An Improvement On the Exit Interview - Spark Hire

The Stay Interview An Improvement On the Exit Interview - Spark HireIf youre like most managers, you probably hold regular performance reviews that are designed to let employees know how theyre doing, and give them a weg to improve on their weaknesses. But what about performance reviews for you, the employer? Wouldnt it make sense to give employees an opportunity to tell you, as an organization, how youre doing?A tool for retention and engagementSome employers do think that makes sense. Theyve implemented whats known as stay interviews to allow employees to give constructive feedback to the organization. The aims build employee engagement and increase the chances of retaining valued employees. The stay interview is a cousin of the exit interview. But where exit interviews are designed so that departing employees can suggest what the organization could do better, stay interviews aim to glean those same suggestions but before valued employees decide to leave.Doing them rightEmployee re tention experts have some suggestions for conducting stay interviewsDecide whom you want to interview. You may choose to talk only to your most valued employees. After all, theyre the ones you most want to stay But if you do go that way, consider the possible downside Employees who arent interviewed may take this as an indication of second-class status, and their morale may suffer.Make clear to interviewees what youre doing. Employees who are unaware of what a stay interview is may be startled that theyre being asked to participate in one. They may even ask themselves whether youre trying to suggest they shouldnt stay The interviewer needs to explain what the interview is about, and what it aims to accomplish.Do it separately from the performance review. Some practitioners of stay interviews do them every six months, at the opposite end of the year from the employees performance review.Act on what you hear. Any time you ask for employee feedback, you need to be prepared either to ac t on it or explain why you cant. The same holds for stay interviews.Sample questionsIf you do decide to give stay interviews a try, here are some of the kinds of questions you may want to askWhen you have a great day at work, what made it that way?If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be?Whats your dream job? When you wake up on weekdays, do you want to jump up and get to work, or hit the snooze button on your alarm? Why?If you received a big inheritance and didnt have to work, what would you miss? What talents, interests or skills do you have that we havent made the most of?Whats bothering you most about your job? What kind of performance feedback would you like that you arent receiving? What have you felt good about accomplishing here (since the last stay interview or throughout time with organization)? You can read more about stay interviews here 6 Stay Interview Questions That Top Employers Ask.About the AuthorDave Clemens is a senior writer for Rapid Learning I nstitute and writes The HR Caf Blog. Heres how to talk to your boss about feeling overwhelmed

Heres how to talk to your babo about feeling overwhelmedHeres how to talk to your boss about feeling overwhelmedLisa Sterling, vice president of product strategy at Ceridian and chief people officer of the company, welches reaching zu sich breaking point.By accepting the role of chief people officer in plus-rechnen to her other responsibilities, she had taken on more than she could chew. It had been months and she welches tired of suffering in silence. She needed to have a difficult conversation with her boss, but she was afraid that bringing it up would make her look like she wasnt up to the job.Her story is a case study a new Harvard Business Review article uses to explain How to Tell Your Boss You Have Too Much Work.Learning how to have difficult conversations with your superiors is key to becoming a better leader, but what makes the conversation so hard is the power dynamics in the room. Its a delicate balance you want to convey your concerns, but you dont want to appear like you cant do the work you were hired to do.Here are some tips to making that conversation productive. No shame in asking for helpThe first step towards having that conversation was Sterling realizing that it was ok to ask for help. She had never asked a manager for help before and was nervous about going to her CEO We worked well together, but I had this fear that he would second-guess his decision to promote me and feel that I wasnt up to the job.One useful thing to remind yourself if you related to that situation your boss is not a mindreader. He or she only knows what you say. If you dont ask for help, people may never realize that you need it. By making herself vulnerable and being upfront about her limitations, Sterling got executive-level coaching from her boss who gave her useful recommendations about how to delegate better in her new position.Come in with solutionsSterling didnt come in just to complain, she knew she needed to use the one-on-one to offer steps about how her situa tion could improve. This is crucial. Complaining or venting is not productive, for you or your boss specific actions are much more likely to be constructive, and they give you a voice in your own career rather than waiting for a boss to hand down a judgment you may not like or agree with.Remember that your boss will also expect you to have some ideas about how to solve your own problems. As a boss herself, Sterling knew that her own boss would want to know how they could solve the problem if you were sitting in my chair.Define expectationsJulie Morgenstern, author of Never Check E-Mail in the Morning, says theres nothing heroic in overcommitting yourself and being a martyr You overcommit because you are ambitious or you want to impress your boss, but then when you fail to deliver - or deliver work that is rushed or of poor quality - it sends a message that you are not reliable.Lets reiterate that the quality of your work is going to be judged more important than the quantity.Turni ng down that extra assignment and taking reprieves should not be seen as a sign of laziness, Morgenstern argues, but as a sign of a worker who knows their healthy limits.Bosses can prevent these conversations about burnout from happening later by defining the scope of the role. For leaders taking on these new roles, part of the job means beingaware of what goals are attainable and what may be overreach.Morgenstern advises telling your boss to define the level of effort needed for each assignment and what a maximum, minimum, and moderate effort looks like. Everyone likes knowing their place, and this definition keeps bosses and their reportson the same page of whats needed on a daily and long-term basis. For Sterling, her solutions involved this kind of prioritizing. She suggested that a non-critical project should get temporarilydelayed and that another director should be hired to take on some of her work. This conversation may not give you the outcome you want, but youll know where yo u standIf your boss is continually insensitive to how busy you are, consider it a sign that you may need to move on to a new job, Morgenstern warned.Thats the lesson Janine Truitt, a Human Resources associate for a large hospital, learned when she talked to her boss about her limits. She did everything right in her difficult conversation. She knew that her workload of handling hires across ten facilities wasnt sustainable, and that things needed to change. She went to her boss and offered small and big solutions such as being clued in on projects at earlier stages, and hiring more people to handle entry-level hires. Her boss was not receptive to any of her ideas and Truitt remainedoverworked. In Truitts case, the conversation did not give her the outcome she wanted, but it had another benefit it showed her definitively that the job was a mismatch for her. She knew from that day forward that her days at the company would be numbered. While this may seem to be sad, its actually a gift t o know that, because it means you can and should move forward in another, more productive path.In the meantime, she turned to her sympathetic co-workers to making her remaining time at the company more bearable. She worked with her colleagues to divide up the workload, buddying up on filling similarpositions for facilities.Recalling her old job, Truitt explained the business argument to not overworking your employees you need to make sure your employees arent consistently stretched beyond what is reasonable.Remember this you do have some leverage, even if you think you dont. What happens if bosses dont listen to employees? Those workers will leave, taking with them their expertise and connections and costing the company thousands of dollars and days of management time to find a replacement. Being good to employees isnt just the right thing to do its also the right decision financially.

Why it matters that more athletes are talking about their mental health

Why it matters that more athletes are talking about their mental healthWhy it matters that more athletes are talking about their mental healthThe great basketball writer Jackie MacMullan recently stood at the front of a hotel ballroom in Tampa taking questions after collecting a career achievement award from the Association for Women in Sports Media.I was in the audience that day. Initially, the questions focused on her early days in basketball as a reporter. But then someone brought up a series of stories MacMullan had written for ESPN brde summer on NBA players mental health problems. MacMullan called it probably the most important thing Ive ever done, and a nearly 10-minute discussion followed. The package featured All-Stars Kevin Love and Paul Pierce, among others, discussing their struggles with depression and anxiety. Other big names backed out at the last minute, concerned about the stigma of mental illness and whether it might hurt their ability to land a good contract in free agency, a point MacMullan emphasized when we spoke after the session ended. She said a league source called the problem rampant.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIts not just the NBA where athletes struggles with mental health are under scrutiny, either. As the director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State University, Ive noticed that mental health and sports is a topic gaining attention among athletes and the journalists who cover them.Wanting to explore why its happening now and why it matters, I talked to some experts in the field.Pro athletes are particularly susceptibleListing every publicly known example of an athlete dealing with a mental health issue would be a tough task, but its clear that neither the particular sport nor an athletes gender makes someone immune.Michael Phelps a swimmer with more medals than anyone in Olympic history has spoke n candidly for years about his struggles with depression. Longtime NFL receiver Brandon Marshall has gone public with his mental health issues, as has 2012 Olympic silver medalist in high jump Brigetta Barrett. Fox Sports has written about the frequency of eating disorders among female college athletes.Experts I spoke with for this story pointed to a couple of reasons professional athletes are particularly susceptible to mental health issues. Many are high-achieving perfectionists, said David Yukelson, the retired director of sports psychology services for Penn State Athletics and a past president of the Association for Applied Sports Psychology.Thats great when it all comes together in victory or a terrific performance, but the toll of perfectionism can be tough when the results dont match an athletes own expectations, Yukelson said.Playing sports in the age of anxietyThe visibility of todays elite athletes exacerbates the pressure.Scott Goldman, president-elect of the Association f or Applied Sport Psychology, told me its hard for fans to understand what its like to constantly be in the spotlight. He recalled watching a pro football player prepare to run onto the field and wonder aloud whether anyone else in the building had people howling at them when they went to work.Add social media to the mix, and all the armchair experts that brings to any sports discussion. Earlier this year, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference We are living in a time of anxiety. I think its a direct result of social media. A lot of players are unhappy. The NBA has responded to the problem with a series of initiatives designed to help players cultivate mental wellness. Beyond compassion, the efforts make geschftliches miteinander sense Happier players lead to better-performing players, which leads to more wins.Attention to mental health issues in sports also seems to be on the uptick in the United Kingdom, said Professor Matthew Smith, a historian at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Smith, whose research focuses on medicine and mental health, has been tracking sports-mental health articles on the BBC for the last couple of years and noted the count recently topped 100 stories. He highlighted the suicide of Wales national mens soccer team manager Gary Speed in 2011 as a watershed moment that catalyzed the countrys awareness and that still makes headlines.Fast forward to this May, when Englands Football Association revealed a campaign to show that mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness, with Prince William making the public announcement.Takeaways for athletes and fansBack in the United States, some wonder whether athletes are opening up about mental health issues because rates of such problems are rising among young adults, or if its simply become more acceptable to talk about the issue.Yukelson said times certainly have changed from the 20th century, when athletes were expected to absorb every setback and insult on their own. Theres more support now. The Association for Applied Sport Psychology, a group for sport psychology consultants and professionals who work with athletes, coaches and nonsport performers, was founded only in 1985. It now has 2,200 members worldwide, according to Emily Schoenbaechler, the groups certification and communications manager.Goldman, meanwhile, compared the situation to not knowing you have a cockroach problem until you turn on a light. In other words, drawing attention to an issue makes more people aware it exists. But its also true that nearly one in five American adults has a mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Thats more than 46 million people. Both Goldman and Yukelson noted that only good things can come from athletes opening up about the issue. The more athletes talk, the more fans might feel inspired to seek help on their own.The National Alliance on Mental Illness lists talking openly about mental health as t he first way to reduce stigma. And an early advocate for speaking out about players mental health, Metta World Peace who changed his name from Ron Artest in 2011 notes that when he first talked about his struggles, the media thought he was crazy. Now the default is to call for getting the athlete some help, he says.It all points to changing attitudes in sports and society.Or as Phelps put it in a recent tweet, getting help is a sign of strength, not weakness.John Affleck, Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society, Pennsylvania State UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. What Extraverted Job Seekers Can Learn from Introverts

What Extraverted Job Seekers Can Learn from Introverts What Extraverted Job Seekers Can Learn from Introverts 5Extraverts are often assumed to have an advantage in the workplace over introverts, since they may seem more outgoing and socially confident. These traits, which are classically considered “extraverted,” can serve job seekers as well. But even the most extraverted job seekers can benefit from following the lead of introverts to build rapport and cultivate trust with professional networks and hiring committees alike. Here’s what extraverted job seekers can learn from introverts during a job search: Try quality networking instead of quantity networking. Introverts know a secret that has been validated by research: networking more widely- having more Facebook friends, and growing your list of contacts ever-larger- isn’t what leads to landing a job. Instead, as reported in Psychology Today: “Getting a job is about the quality and diversity of the relationships you build, not the number of people you contact or the number of times you reach out to them.” The key is creating and building true connections with people- connections that help other people feel positive emotions. Studies of work teams actually show that while extraverts may feel more positive emotions themselves than introverts do, this doesn’t translate into others feeling good. With this in mind, extraverts should challenge themselves to up their game in the networking department, with a goal of creating closer bonds by helping to deliver quality experiences for other people. Use active listening during interviews. If you think of an extravert, your first image may be of someone who loves center stage. This can be a big benefit during a job interview in terms of comfort level, since extraverts aren’t intimidated by the spotlight that’s turned on them during the QA. However, there’s a caveat to loving the limelight: you need to be sure that you don’t take it too far and neglect the other people in the conversation. Introverts know that listening to others- and truly understanding what they are saying- is critical to successful communication. Even though you’re the one being interviewed, you want to make it clear that you’re listening actively to what the hiring team is asking you. To help improve your active listening skills, you might want to bring pen and paper to your interview to jot down key points that others are saying when they speak. If you’re so busy thinking about what you’re going to say next that you miss half of the question, your answer won’t be impressive. Replace “thinking on your feet” with “thinking it through.” Extraverts are often credited with a natural ability to “think on the fly,” not needing quiet time to formulate a response but instead being able to answer articulately right off the cuff. But don’t think too fast- introverts know the advantage of mulling ideas over before they speak. When an interviewer asks you a question, don’t just fire off the first thing that comes to mind. Take a moment to consider the question and choose the best approach to answering it. You might even ask the hiring committee to give you a moment to consider your response before delivering it. This shows the team that you’re taking their question seriously and preparing a thoughtful reply. While extraverts may have an easier time initially commanding attention during a job search, introverts just might be better at keeping the attention of decision-makers who count. If you want an extra edge while you look for a new position, take a page from the introvert’s playbook. Looking for more job search ideas? Check out our job search tips category.

Why relocating may be the next best step for your career

Why relocating may be the next best step for your career Why relocating may be the next best step for your career A considerable number of professionals are relocating, and for good reason. Locations have always played a key role in the availability of certain types of jobs. Detroit became the hub of automotive industry in the early twentieth century; San Francisco attracts technology companies; New York City now focuses on financial, media and technology. The reality of the job market is that the right job isn’t always available within a commutable distance. This prompted us to investigate just how often the job seekers apply for jobs outside their current location. Using our 2015 database  of six  million members, this is what we found.Job seekers stay local in large citiesLooking at this year’s nationwide job application data on Ladders, we observed that 39% of the applications sent out were from job seekers applying to jobs outside their current location (defined by their “DMA” â€" Designated Market Area). Further, we also discerned the likelihood of a job seeker applying to a job outside of their DMA varies greatly by the population of that location. The cha rt below highlights that as the population of the DMA decreases, the likelihood of candidates sending applications outside their current location increases. The adjacent table details the top 10 DMAs, by population, and their ranking in terms of job applications coming from out-of-town professionals. What we see in the chart above is that job seekers in the 10 highest-ranked DMAs only sent 29 percent of their applications out of town, compared to the national average of 39 percent. Job seekers in all other DMAs exceeded the national average, with the 11th to 25th most populated locations sending close to 50 percent of applications out of town. Cities with a population rank of 51 or higher sent over 60 percent of their job applications to other DMAs. This is significant, considering that the DMAs ranked from 11 to 25 include many large cities such as Phoenix, Seattle and Detroit.Recruiters don’t consider relocation as a deal-breakerBut are these out-of-town applications worthwhile? We examined next the employer side of the equation. If, for instance, employers are not likely to entertain out-of-town applications, then the volume of applications to alternate DMAs may not matter. To determine this, we reviewed the rate at which employers accepted applications that seemed a potential “fit” for the position. We found that 12 percent of candidates nationwide received a positive rating by the recruiter, compared to an 11 percent acceptance rate for applications that were from outside the job’s location. Based on our analyses, if candidates are treated negatively because they require relocation, it isn’t by a large degree at all. This is good news for relocation candidates! So where do the job seekers go?We’ve determined that more job seekers from smaller DMAs look for out-of-town opportunities compared to those from larger areas. But where do they go?New York continues to be the most desirable relocation DMA, however the gap between other cities has come do wn this year when compared to the last. Washington, D.C. and Atlanta are displaying significant growths within in the past year, while Dallas and San Francisco continue to maintain a high share. The following visualization depicts the flip side of this  â€"  four metro areas and their imbalances, in terms of out-of-town job applications, with other cities.Philadelphia pushes a lot of job applications to New York; proximity may play a role here. Besides New York, Atlanta and Washington, D.C., figure out prominently. Last year, Dallas was the most prominent destination out of these cities. While Dallas remains a desirable destination, Atlanta and Washington D.C. display a remarkable increase.Breaking this down one layer further, we see that not every location is considered equally desirable across professional functions. The visualization below depicts which functions are gaining out-of-town applications (by city) and in which functions and locations the job seekers are looking to new DMAs for their next job.For example, New York remains dominant in the fields of finance, and marketing, though it may be giving in some of its edge in Technology. While Dallas and San Francisco continue to be a desirable destination for Technology, we see good gains in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta for Technology jobs, possibly some at the expense of New York. If you build it, job seekers will come We continue to see a trend emerging that seems to hold true throughout history: job seekers go where the jobs are. As different locations attract specific functions (i.g. New York maintaining finance and marketing hub status or Dallas becoming technology hub), the influx of applications from alternate locations grows. This is only our second year of taking a close look at professional movements across cities, and already we see some changes in patterns on a year to year basis. Even though New York continues to be the most popular destination for professionals, we see a lot more balance this year. As we look towards the future, we can expect more competitiveness among different cities, as more and more professionals go to the cities considered to be top hubs for their industry. It appears these job seekers will be met with success and have the opportunity to explore new and exciting chapters in their careers.

10 Reasons Mom Always Knows Best About Job Search

10 Reasons Mom Always Knows Best… About Job Search 10 Reasons Mom Always Knows Best… About Job Search There is a joke that says eventually we all quote our mothers, and in many cases we turn into them. Maybe you’ve experienced that feeling of adopting your mother’s all-knowing tone as you correct your neighbor’s unruly children or chastise your roommate for not eating enough leafy green vegetables. These utterances are often followed by a moment of horror as you hear your mother’s voice emanating from your own body. While usually told in jest and accompanied by an eye roll, not only does the old we-all-become-our-mothers joke often ring true, but motherly advice becomes particularly relevant the older we get- including in the world of job search. I polled friends, family and the Simply Hired office to come up with a list of our ten favorite “Mom-isms” and how they can help you in your job search. 1. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” We all know it doesn’t serve us well in life to be judgmental or rude. As you job search, interview and network, it’s even more important to remain polished and kind, just like Mom always taught you. And remember, never badmouth your old employer. About.com’s job search expert Allison Doyle cautions job seekers: “Regardless of why you left, dont speak badly about your previous employer. The interviewer may wonder if you will be bad-mouthing his company next time youre looking for work.” 2.  â€œIf at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” If you were like me, your first lesson about perseverance came from the lips of your mother cloaked in a sing-song voice as you attempted to swing across the monkey bars or ride your bike without training wheels. It seems so simple, and yet it’s one of the best pieces of advice my mom ever gave me. Job search can be hard, especially when you’ve been unemployed for a while or you’re unhappy in your current position. Not only is it important to remain positive, but it’s also important to just keep putting yourself out there. 3.  â€œEat your vegetables.” OK, I’m not saying that eating your vegetables is actually going to tangibly affect your job search or interviewing, although those leafy greens will definitely help your overall health and possibly improve your concentration. Rather, think about being a small child sitting at the kitchen table as your mother forced you to choke down those despised Brussels sprouts. Sometimes we have to do things that we don’t like. The same can be said at beginning to job search, writing a cover letter, or updating your resume. In fact some of these most mundane and boring activities are the ones that in the end will make your job search “healthy.” So pick up your fork, take a deep breath, swallow those Brussels sprouts, and write that cover letter. 4.  â€œAnyone can work hard. In order to stand out, you have to work smart.” In high school I struggled to be successful in Advanced Placement Biology.   After one particularly difficult exam, I lashed out at my parents, whining about how unfair it was that I received a poor grade. I will always remember my mother’s response, “Sweetie, you keep telling us how hard you worked. In my opinion, you need to stop working hard and start working smart.” I have never forgotten those words, and they have changed the way that I approach work and job search. Rather than spending hours sifting through classified advertisements for jobs, use job search engines like Simply Hired to find the right jobs to apply to. 5.  â€œThere’s no shame in asking for help. Better to ask for help and do the job right than to do it on your own and do it wrong.” In job search, just as in life, it can be difficult to admit that you need help, and even embarrassing in some cases. Sometimes we don’t want to admit to ourselves that we can’t quite get the job done alone. Some of the best jobs are found through networking. According to Jobvite’s 2014 Job Seeker Nation Study,  40 percent of job seekers found their “favorite or best” job through personal connections. So Mom is right, not only is there no shame in asking for help as you navigate the tricky waters of job search, it actually increases your odds of finding a job that you love. 6.  â€œBelieve in yourself and what you’re capable of.” The best moms know that it’s their job to not only love their children, but also to inspire them to do their best every day. According to the group of people I spoke to about their mothers, this piece of advice was one that almost everyone had received at one point or another. Job search can be a grueling process, particularly in a changing economy, and it can be easy to succumb to disappointment and negativity. However, if you don’t believe in yourself, it becomes obvious to those around you, and it’s harder for others to believe in you. 7.  â€œYou don’t know if you like it until you try it.” Picture it: you’re sitting at the dinner table with your family, nose scrunched as you push questionable looking meatloaf around your plate dejectedly. Your mom looks at you and gently reminds you, “You don’t know if you like it, until you try it.” Just like you at the dinner table, in job search and well-rounded careers it’s important to take risks and try new things. Without tasting that meatloaf, or applying to that little-known start-up, you don’t know what you like, what you don’t like and what you’ll want. 8.  â€œWhen one door closes, another door opens.” We’ve all had disappointments in life, and some of those career-related disappointments in particular can be difficult to swallow. However, sometimes it’s important to focus on the positives that career change can bring. My mom always encourages me to look at disappointments and difficulties in my life as opportunities for growth and change, and that’s a great thing to keep in mind when exploring a career change. 9. “The heart wants what it wants.” Sometimes we are all so caught up in the business of life that we struggle to take time to appreciate and find meaning in what we’re doing. One woman I spoke to said that her mother reminds her that it’s always important to listen to what her heart wants rather than getting caught up in the turmoil of her brain’s calculations and strategies. When looking for your next job, it’s easy to be distracted by your list of criteria and the pros and cons. Sometimes it’s more important to take a moment and ask yourself what you truly want. 10. “When you’re little, your problems are little, and as you grow so do they, so enjoy each stage of your life.” This may be my favorite piece of advice that a good friend shared with me. Her mother always cautions her to not think too carefully of the past or the future, but rather to enjoy the moment. It’s important to enjoy every part of our lives, and job search is no different. Enjoy the excitement of exploring new opportunities, meeting new people and getting the chance to advance your career. Mother’s Day is a wonderful day to say thank you to the women who have shaped our lives and taught us so much. Who knew that they taught us so much about job search, too? Happy Mother’s Day (and thanks mom) from Simply Hired!

This is your dream job if you love Hallmark Holiday movies

This is your dream job if you love Hallmark Holiday movies This is your dream job if you love Hallmark Holiday movies Will you sit down and full on watch a Hallmark Holiday movie in the middle of July if it is on? Do you actually associate Candace Cameron Bure and Lacey Chabert more with the Hallmark channel than on the television shows that appeared on first as children and then as adolescents? Do you wonder why you never meet charming attractive potential love interests at a bakery, Christmas tree farm or ice skating rink? Well, if this is you then you are going to want the following job.Synthetic Cinema has an open sign-up for background roles AKA extras in a “Christmas romantic drama” that will air on The Hallmark Channel, according to  The Day. Surprisingly this production will not actually be filmed in Canada, where many of the Hallmark movies are filmed, but in Connecticut.“What’s cool for extras is coming down and seeing the whole process,” producer Andrew Gernhard told The Day. “Seeing the crew and the other extras and the stars and actually being able to be involved.” Plus, f ake snow will be involved (obviously.) How could you not want this job?The Hallmark formulaIt has not been announced which leading lady of Hallmark will be involved with this production but there is always a strong chance it could be Cameron Bure, Chabert or another actress who was the star of a successful television show in the early 90s, played a secondary character on a successful television show in the early 90s, played a tertiary character on a successful show in the early 90s, or was on a soap opera.Hallmark put out 22 new holiday films in 2018 alone (that is a whole lot of fake snow) and the channel just announced it will air one of their holiday movies every Friday night for the rest of the year. That means gingerbread contests, hot cocoa cookoffs, and romantic sleigh rides every week!According to Crown Media, the parent of Hallmark and its sister network Hallmark Movies Mysteries, the network nabbed more female viewers (aged 18 to 49 and 25 to 54) than any other cable netw ork during Q4 of last year.

Key salary negotiation tips you need to know

Key salary negotiation tips you need to know Key salary negotiation tips you need to know When I interviewed at Google several years ago, they told me up front that the salary was non-negotiable. It was very much a take-it-or-leave-it offer. You may run into situations like this once or twice over the course of your career, but in most cases, there’s  room for negotiation. In fact, I get worried when one of our senior hires doesn’t attempt to negotiate their offer. That’s actually a bad sign, and I start wondering how they’re going to react when a vendor makes an offer. Will they just accept it without negotiating in that situation, too?I know these negotiations can be anxiety-inducing, but there are things you can do to ease any nerves and put yourself in the best position to come away with a better offer.Negotiate based on what’s important to you.Your salary can certainly be important to your quality of life, but it isn’t the only part of the contract you can negotiate. In fact, most people I talk to don’t name salary as the most important factor in their dec ision to take a job. There are so many other aspects of compensation and responsibilities that can have a much bigger effect on overall happiness. For some, a title is important. For others, it’s the amount of ownership they have over their work. At a startup, many people value equity and upside potential the most.Figure out what matters to you and focus your negotiations around that. If it happens to be a salary, that’s perfectly fine. Just realize it’s not the only compensation you can consider.Know the market ahead of time.Depending on your career and industry, you’ll want to be aware of the market dynamics at play when you’re interviewing.I worked in investment banking for two years out of college and then took some time off to travel. This was 2002, so when I began looking for work again, we were still in the midst of a recession. In that type of market, the labor pool for companies that are hiring is huge- and it can work against you.I ended up getting a job offer to be a financial analyst at a well-known magazine. It seemed like a natural fit for me, and they gave me a week to make my decision.Unfortunately, I waited until the day before the deadline to tell them I would accept. And when I got in touch, I found out they’d given the job to someone else.By dragging out my decision, I made it look like I was balancing different offers. I didn’t factor in the poor job market, and there was obviously someone who seemed more eager to take the position.Remember, nothing is official until the paper is signed. If you’re going to take a role, let the company know you’re really excited about it- and understand the market dynamics that may influence your negotiations.Don’t get too ahead of yourself with career planning and optimizations.Over the course of a long career, a difference of a few thousand dollars won’t matter as much as the more intangible aspects of the job. What really matters is whether you like your manager, whether you like the company, and what you’ll learn in this position. How is this going to help you get to your next role?It may not feel great to take a lower salaried position, but if it puts you on the trajectory you want, then it probably won’t matter in the long run.Personally, there were times in my career when I took pay cuts because I wanted to pursue a more interesting opportunity, or I wanted to take a role where I had no experience. When I started working at Aeropostale after business school, I had no tangible experience in retail, but it was a way for me to shift industries. So even though my salary was lower than a lot of my fellow graduates, I took the job.In my experience, the people who tend to make the most money are those who are really good at what they do. That comes from doing something you love, something that plays to your strengths. You should always negotiate your offers- just remember there are other forms of compensation than numbers on your paycheck. This article originally appeared on Inc.

How to Stop Being So Hard on Yourself at Work - The Muse

How to Stop Being So Hard on Yourself at Work - The Muse How to Stop Being So Hard on Yourself at Work How often have you gone to work and marveled at how sharp everyone you work with seems to be? And how often does that make you feel like you’re not quite as smart as everyone else? For a long time, I used to think it was just me. But the more I talk to other motivated, successful people, the more I realize that everyone feels inferior sometimes. I suppose it’s one of the few downsides of working at an awesome company with awesome people. (The other is the inevitable weight gain from all the snacks in the kitchen.) But, knowing that we’re all in the same boat doesn’t give you an excuse to dwell on it. So, when you’re having one of those moments (or days), remember these things: 1. You’re Your Own Biggest Critic The fact that you’re even reading this article is a clear indicator that you’re pretty hard on yourself. After all, it resonated enough with you that you clicked. And while it’s admirable that you have such high standards for yourself, you’ll only drive yourself crazy if you only focus on what you could’ve done better. To help you be a little easier on yourself, I’m going to suggest something that I do pretty regularly: Reserve some time on your calendar at the end of every week to review all the positive feedback you’ve gotten over the last few days. For me, I go back and read emails from colleagues and friends who wanted to let me know I did a good job. For you, that might mean taking notes about certain conversations you’ve had in passing. Whatever you decide works best for you, make it a regular event to remind yourself that everyone around you thinks you’re awesome. 2. Everyone Makes Mistakes OK, so here’s the thing: Even those people who you’ve never seen mess anything up have made their fair share of mistakes. In fact, odds are they’ve gotten to be as sharp as they are because they were willing to face those mistakes head on and learn a thing or two from those experiences. Hey, I get it. It’s easy to look over at the person sitting next to you and think, “That person’s grammar’s always impeccable. Why isn’t my copy as clean as hers?” No matter what you do for a living, I bet you’ve looked at someone and wondered why he or she’s so much better than you are at doing the same job. But the truth is that these people are often making as many mistakes as you are to get the end result you see. So, resist the urge to compare yourself and instead focus on learning from any errors you make along the way. That approach will only make you smarter and smarter. 3. You Wouldn’t Have Been Hired if You Weren’t Smart, Too I know how hard it is to shake a really intense case of impostor syndrome. You look around at the people you get to work with and think, “How did I sneak in here?” But as hard as this might be to believe, you didn’t sneak in. You proved you were smart and would be a huge asset to the company, so much so that it was obvious you’d be an awesome hire. However, knowing this on a rational level isn’t always enough. So, if it’s really gnawing at you, speak to your boss about what skills he or she thinks you can improve upon. And if the answer is, “Nothing, we’re just so glad you chose to come work for us,” follow up and ask, “What skills would I need to get to the next level?” Then, do what you need to do get to that level: sign up for a class, watch an online tutorial, find a mentor. Showing this level of initiative will reinforce your boss’ belief that he or she made the right decision to hire you, and should also put you at ease about whether or not you’re just as capable as everyone else. A lot of the things that make smart people feel dumb tend to be self-inflicted. Remember, if you truly feel like you’re behind everyone else, you can always (always!) improve yourself. So even if it’s all in your head- which it probably is- you’ll still come out on top. Photo of frustrated woman courtesy of Shutterstock.

3 Ways to Become a Thought Leader in the Workplace

3 Ways to Become a Thought Leader in the Workplace 3 Ways to Become a Thought Leader in the Workplace Take a personal approach to being recognized for your expertise among your colleagues.Thought leader. You might have heard this phrase - and you’re not quite sure what it means. It’s difficult to find an exact definition that is universally accepted, but a thought leader is someone who is known for their innovative ideas, expertise, and is widely recognized as a source of guidance in their industry. Some thought leaders that come to mind are Seth Godin, Oprah Winfrey, and the late Steve Jobs. However, being a thought leader in the workplace is a little different. Your interactions and reputation are within the confines of the office - so your approach to being a thought leader should be on a personal level.Become recognized as a thought leaderHere are three tips to being a thought leader in your workplace: Create a Presence. In order to be known for your expertise, you must first be known in general. You can do this by developing your skills in the workplace. The goal is to be known for something that adds value and makes you a frontrunner in the field. Be a Mentor. Being a mentor to an intern or entry-level employee is not just beneficial to them - you’ll be encouraged to learn and know enough about your industry in order to guide them with ease. As Albert Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” Know Your Limitations. You don’t have to strive to know everything, but you should know what you don’t know. Simply put, don’t be tempted to exaggerate your knowledge or ability, as you’ll be risking your credibility and accountability. The best practice is to refer to someone who does know. In the end, they may return the favor when someone could use your expertise. How can you be a thought leader in the workplace?Reposted with permission from Personal Branding Blog

Employees are willing to quit their jobs if they cant relocate

Employees are willing to quit their jobs if they can't relocate Employees are willing to quit their jobs if they can't relocate Employees want the freedom to choose where they will spend their days working. Many of them are willing to stake their future at a company over it.In a new survey of 1,000 employees and human resources representatives by  Wakefield Research  and  Topia,  more than one-fifth of U.S. professionals - 22% - said they have quit a job directly because they were denied the opportunity to transfer to a different location, and even 10% of those employees said they had done it more than just one time.Why flexibility around moving drives employees to quitBad communication between managers and employees seems to be driving the drastic action to quit over not being able to move. In many cases, employees said they were not aware they could relocate cities with their job. According to the survey of HR professionals, 99% of them said they offered relocation as an option, but over 40% of American employees surveyed said their employer did not communicate this option to them.The strong desire to rel ocate is not just about the transfer itself, but about a desire for autonomy in the workplace. When your manager does not let you move to a different company location, what they are saying is that they control how and where you conduct your work. And many employees cannot handle this ultimatum.Flexibility has what has long been what can keep a good employee to stay or push them to quit. A Ladders survey found that flexible hours was the top desired perk Millennials wanted. When your company allows you to work flexibly, they signal that they are committed in your personal professional development, and that commitment, in turn, inspires loyalty.close dialogAdvertisement close dialog/* effects for .bx-campaign-1012255 *//* custom css .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-type-agilityzone .bx-close { z-index: 2;}@-ms-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { -ms-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -ms-transform: rotate(360deg) ; } } @-moz-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { -moz-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -moz-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-webkit-keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { -webkit-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -webkit-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @keyframes bx-anim-1012255-spin { from { transform: rotate(0deg); } to { transform: rotate(360deg); } } #bx-close-inside-1012255 { top: 0; right: 0; } /* KD - Remove padding from video wrapper and set height to 100% */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper { padding-top: 0!important; height: 100%;}.bx-custom#bx-campaign-1012255 #bx-creative-1012255 .bx-wrap { height: auto;}/* KD - Change positioning to static as that was not necesaary and here you can adjust the height of the video element */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper video { position: static;}/* rendered styles .bx-campaign-1012255 */.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative *:first-child {width: 100%;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative {background-color: transparent;border-style: none;max-width: 900px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255.bx-active-step-1 .bx-close {stroke: white;background-color: black;border-style: solid;border-color: white;border-width: 1px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-group-1012255-AFvXBOB {padding: 10px;display: block;width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y {width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-element-1012255-J0EiS8Y *:first-child {padding: 2px 4px;font-size: 10px;color: rgb(255, 255, 255);text-transform: uppercase;background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.34);}
